Well as you can see from my previous post I managed to get my blog reinstalled.
What happened, in a nutshell: I woke up one Sunday morning and made myself a cup of tea. While sipping at my cuppa I checked the stats plugin on my blog. Only it didn’t exist. It didn’t exist because the blog didn’t exist. The blog didn’t exist because /var and /home on my VPS didn’t exist. Where did they go? I don’t know.
Probably not the best course of action, but still not awake, I rebooted the VPS on which the blog resided. Still no /var or /home.
I emailed the VPS provider’s emergency email address and got no response. After an hour of no response I emailed the regular support address. I got no response to that until Monday. As explained to me, the second email was later mistaken for a response by the VPS so nobody responded to the original email. I’m now considering another provider or to just leave it housed here, on my Germany-based dedicated server. I’d wanted to have a cheap VPS with a UK IP so I’d never gotten rid of my Bytemark VPS. I’m still considering what to do, but I’m fairly certain it will no longer involve a Bytemark VPS.
I’m not overly fussed by the loss. As usual, these clouds often contain silver linings. I wanted to upgrade to WordPress 2.7, as I’d been using some ancient version that was still considered safe when Debian Etch was released. I also wanted to go through my old posts and check for any “linkrot” so this blog upgrade is going to be a work in progress for a while — a “LIP WIP” if you will.
